A Wee Bit Late to the Party

New Year, New Decade, and for so many reasons, my head is finally coming up for air. I have been deep diving into my life, and doing the hard work to sort through what I was leaving behind, and what I was bringing forward.

It was pretty easy to get stuck between the nostalgia of what was falling away, and what I was still wanting to hold on to. If you find yourself in the in-between space, I am here to remind you that presence is your greatest gift. PRESENCE was the one constant I kept getting stuck in, and the one constant I was not able to show up for.

I opened the shoppe, and went on auto pilot to create something so wonderful here in Brighton for myself, and for others. What was missing was the power of presence. Was I always present? No–if the truth be known, I was not always present. I was present in my work, present in my events, but not always present in my own life; except during the moments of grief, or the reminders of what was missing in my life.

When I got to the holiday season this year, my heart was not dancing in joy. I was exhausted, and just wanted to shut down. In the past, Christmas was always my most favourite time of the year. Heartbreakingly for me, somewhere along the last few years it changed. I retreated, and went into hiding from Christmas Day onward. This year, I was safe in the shoppe as my joy is always there. I thought for sure this time I would make it, and then it happened. The next day when I had to be present for just me, I crumbled.

On December 31st, I sat with my journal in hand; writing out the last decade, and all of the losses. The losses included my Mom, 2 dogs, a relationship, my best friend, and the shedding of a 30 year career, amongst so much more. Why was I able to sit present for the past, and not present for the exact place I was in? This is when it all turned around. The ritual in my journal dropped me to my knees, and I knew I missed out on the greatest present of all–PRESENCE.

Now to rewind a week……

A week before Christmas, one of my dearest girlfriends of almost 40 years was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and I was devastated. I was devastated for her, for her children, and for her grandchildren. When Carolyn told me there was no treatment and she was choosing assisted dying, I fell apart. I begged her to wait for me to get down to see her, and she agreed; but in the end, she cancelled. Understandably, she was in too much pain, and she was home with her kids.

That last week leading up to Christmas waiting for news, I was again on autopilot, and again not fully present. In phone conversations with Carolyn, and on Facebook, she spoke of nothing but love, and asking us all to not sweat the small stuff. She had no anger, no self pity and no regrets. She spoke of how proud she was of her kids, her grandkids, as well as how proud she was of me. Carolyn was fully present, and I was fully in my stuck energy not understanding, why assisted dying? Why during the holidays?

On New Years Eve, I finally started moving that energy. I finally lifted my head up, and said I was going to take Carolyn’s words to heart, and stop seeing the losses. I was called by a friend of ours, and assumed Carolyn had died as she left a goodbye on Facebook. I went into my storage boxes to rip open so many of my life keepsakes, looking for pictures of Carolyn and I back in the 80s. Yes, thank you Carolyn, you made sure I went through right to the last box where I found us. I posted those pictures on Facebook, with a heartfelt write up thanking Carolyn for her unconditional love, and her unwavering friendship. Well doesn’t she get me again by replying “Oh Patrice thanks for cheering me up like only you can.”

I picked up my journal right then and there to finish the decade off by not only writing about the losses, but to write about the many blessings. I was looking at it not from the past, but from the present. My blessings were my Mom, 2 dogs, a relationship, my best friend and the shedding of a 30 year career amongst so much more. Those losses were truly blessings, as without those moments in my life I would not be where I am today. I am blessed to be in Brighton, and be the proud owner of a wonderful shoppe. I am blessed to have each and every person that has walked into my shoppe, who came to an event or just shared kindnesses when we passed each other.

That afternoon, my girlfriend of almost 40 years passed away peacefully and on her own terms. She lived her life with such grace and fire, and she passed away with that same grace and fire. Carolyn made sure we will celebrate New Year’s one way or another. Maybe this New Year’s was a tough one, but in years to come we will dance again for the coming New Year, while celebrating her grace and fire as well as our own. Being present, I see Carolyn was leaving us with a gift, and she didn’t have to go into the next decade with pain. My girlfriend lived a sometimes very difficult life, and she did not sit in that pain on her last days. My girlfriend taught me so much more in those last 2 weeks than what I had learned all of 2019. Carolyn Cormier, I sure do love you and thank you for sharing so many crazy memories with me. Forever and For Always.

Now My Truth

Speaking my truth and my sharing is a pretty difficult thing, as it shows my vulnerabilities and, in some peoples eyes, my weaknesses. I remember more than once being asked why I was crying because to them, I was the strongest person they had ever met. I took shame in those words, and became afraid to share my own stories; my own wounds. I would fear when my tears welled up, and I started to notice they came up in anger, they came up in frustration, in sharing others stories, as well as in my own. I was realizing I was just really sensitive, and I needed to stop being embarrassed about it. I realized if you take away that part of me, you take away the very essence of who I am. I have spent years quieting my inner child, who naturally shared her tears so no one would make fun of me. Now I am spending years trying to reconnect with her, and bring her out into my heart and into my soul. The truth is that speaking your truth, and sharing your story, is one of the bravest, most vulnerable and empowering gifts that gives us permission to learn and to heal.

There is no shame in sharing your story. It’s a HUGE opportunity to learn and to grow. There is no shame in crying, as they truly are tears of your inner beauty.

Here is a 2020 Checklist for You

  1. List your top THREE wins from 2019 and CELEBRATE!

  2. List your top THREE goals you will accomplish in 2020 to make it your BANNER year!

  3. Ask yourself what doors do I need to close in 2019 that are no longer serving me? What do I need to bless and release that is draining me of energy? What will I stop doing in 2020 to create space to shift into JOY & become the BEST version of myself?

  4. How can I step into my power in 2020 and live UNAPOLOGETICALLY?

  5. What are five words you want to have in your life that represent who or where you want to be in 2020

Now is YOUR time to DISRUPT your default, and design the life you CRAVE!!

Here are my answers for this checklist:

  1. Top THREE wins from 2019 that I am celebrating are the opening of my shoppe, the start of my retreats and events here in Brighton, and learning to release the version of myself that is no longer needed.

  2. Top THREE goals I wish to accomplish in 2020 to make it my BANNER year is loving myself and being unapologetic about it, starting to write the book I have been talking about for many years, and planning the most amazing retreat for summer 2021 in a country that my soul calls home.

  3. I need to close the doors on some limiting beliefs that keep showing up, and knocking me down. I need to bless and release parts of my family that have been draining my energy even though they are not present in my life. In 2020 I will stop putting others first at the detriment of my own self care so I can become the BEST version of myself and fill my life with JOY.

  4. In 2020, I plan on bringing my business to the next level, and in doing this I will be needing some personal time to do some deep diving and planning. I am a sole proprietor of Happy Place, and I also run other events as well as retreats. I realize part of my burn out is because I haven’t practiced my own ritual of self care for myself, and that is a new power I plan on bringing in. I will be saying “Sorry, but not Sorry” when I close the shoppe for retreats, events or appointments. I promise to be mindful as best as I can, without putting my own self care at risk. If I go on a retreat, please understand that it is very difficult to hold retreats for others if I am not willing to do my own inner healing. Would you like to go on a retreat with someone who has never been brave enough to go look at their own shadow? In sharing this new power, I will be closing the shoppe from March 16th to Friday April 3rd, inclusive, as I will be on a retreat.

  5. My five words are Acceptance, Self Love, Freedom, Joy and Presence.

Please feel free to email your answers to me, as I would love to hear about them.

Going forward in this next decade, I invite you all to read an amazing book which serves as a great blueprint for your soul. I have read this book many times, and it is one I choose to keep close at hand, always. Remember, we are spiritual beings having a human experience, and will definitely trip-up. This book will serve as a cushion for those trip-ups. I have the books, and the audio format in my shoppe, so please come in and grab one.

Here is a quick rundown of the astrological hotspots of the year as delivered by Chani Nicholas:

Eclipses: We ended 2019 with a solar eclipse in Capricorn and will begin 2020 with a lunar eclipse in Cancer. An emotionally charged exit and entrance that helps to clarify what to focus on for the coming year. Eclipses tend to bring one chapter to a close while another opens.

The first eclipse of the year is a lunar eclipse in Cancer on January 10th. With Uranus stationing direct on the same day, this eclipse asks us to ponder what radical care might look like for ourselves, our families, and our communities. After this eclipse, there is only one more solar eclipse in Cancer (June 21st) and one lunar eclipse in Capricorn (on July 5th) for a long while.

The eclipses are moving on.

Gemini is home to a double-header this year; as Venus retrogrades through it starting in May, the north node joins in on the party. The north node will be bringing an increase of energy and activity in the area of our chart that contains Gemini, an increase of communication in general, and a megaphone for all manner of messages.

How we deliver them will matter.

For the part of our chart that contains Sagittarius, the opposite is true. In May, the south node enters Sagittarius and acts like a cosmic clean-up crew purifying any excess we accumulated over the course of 2019 (thanks to Jupiter).

Again these eclipses will be specifically impacting the parts of your chart that contain Gemini and Sagittarius. Look to the meanings of those houses and any planets you may have in these signs to understand what is coming up for you.

Saturn conjunct Pluto: Occurring on January 12th, a couple of days after the lunar eclipse in Cancer. This transit is for the hard-core. It emphasizes the destructive nature of corporate greed and sounds the alarm on dictators and dementors of all kinds. Whatever shadows you’ve been too timid to address need to be worked with now. Saturn always brings an issue into form. A deadline onto our desks. A reality to check. Pluto is a deep reservoir of power, but in order to access the wealth within its underworlds, we must face the monsters of corruption that lurk in its shadows.

Saturn in Aquarius: Saturn ventures into Aquarius for a small stint before the Grand Conjunction on December 21. From the end of March to the beginning of July, Saturn will test the waters of Aquarius. This is a preview of its upcoming agenda there, something we’ll be up to our necks in come the end of 2020.

Venus and Mars retrograde: Venus retrogrades through Gemini from May 13th - June 25th and Mars retrogrades through Aries from September 9 - November 14. That means by the time we get out of the post retrograde shadow of one, we immediately enter the pre-shadow shadow of the other. Review of relationship dynamics (Venus) and the actions we need to take in order to honor ourselves and each other (Mars) will dominate the year. As Mars and Mercury retrograde through the beginning of November, nothing late in the year looks that easy, simple, or straightforward. Dealing with anger issues, separations, and acts of aggression will dominate mid to late 2020. Mars spends half the year in Aries, one of its home signs, making it exceptionally strong and obvious. These knives are sharp and we must learn to wield them wisely. Vote accordingly.

Jupiter conjunct Pluto: While in Capricorn, Jupiter makes 3 conjunctions to Pluto (one in April, one in June, one in November). This power surge may blow a fuse or two, but can be worked with to make some fairly big moves. Jupiter goes big and never goes home. Pluto’s resources are never-ending. Together they can spark massive appetites, useful when applied to the pursuit of justice, equality, and sustainability, harmful when used for personal gain alone. This is the beginning of a new Jupiter/Pluto cycle.

Jupiter in Aquarius: Jupiter makes one swift move into Aquarius on December 19th, meeting up with Saturn at the solstice and staying there until the end of 2020. Here, Jupiter expands our visions, helps us to think outside the box, and blesses us with the humanitarian visions of The Water-bearer.

The astrology of 2020 brings with it era-defining transits that impact us collectively and personally. What we embark on now will impact us for many decades to come. What we do with the opportunities that come our way will help us to develop our relationship to a specific area of our life and our potential. Horoscopes are meant to be read as inspiration.  If you know both your rising sign and sun sign, please read both horoscopes.  They both contain information for you.

In short, the key components of the astrology of 2020 will impact the signs in the following ways:

  • Aries & Aries Rising – Professional growth, recognition for your efforts, and committing to the aspects of your career that matter most to you.

  • Taurus & Taurus Rising – Growth through committing to a destination that encourages your self-development, knowledge, and helps you gain the experiences most soulfully satisfying for you.

  • Gemini & Gemini Rising – Growth through committing to the healing practices you most need at this point on your life as committing to the collaborative efforts your life is calling for.

  • Cancer & Cancer Rising – Growth through committed partnerships and the developments of appropriate structure

  • s, boundaries, and responsibilities in personal and professional relationships.

  • Leo & Leo Rising – Growth through developing the structures and boundaries required to achieve what you want to in your work-life and for your overall well-being.

  • Virgo & Virgo Rising – Growth through committing to the structures your creative projects are calling for.

  • Libra & Libra Rising – Growth through development of a solid home-base and foundation.

  • Scorpio & Scorpio Rising – Growth through communications, writing projects, and your daily life and rituals.

  • Sagittarius & Sagittarius Rising – Transforming your financial systems and structures, while creating avenues for sustainable growth.

  • Capricorn & Capricorn Rising – Personal growth through committing to the projects that encourage your maturity, integrity, and self-respect.

  • Aquarius & Aquarius Rising – Tapping into the inner wealth and growth that is available to you through your practices of introspection, the development of behind the scenes work, and your personal healing.

  • Pisces & Pisces Rising – Growth through social roles and the development of structures that serve the group, community, or collective.

These datebooks share moon wisdom, planetary aspects including eclipses, astrology basics, astrological overview of 2020 and so much more.  You do not want to go through this year without the wisdom these datebooks will share with you in the upcoming months ahead.

Please stop into the shoppe and pick yourself one up.  I will be honest each one has a special element to it which makes it difficult to choose.  Depending on what you are looking for in your life this datebook will be what directs you in your decision.

Here is a look at 2020 numerology predictions, written by Erika W. Smith:

"2020 is the beginning of a new decade, and of course, it’s a presidential election year. That's why we're happy to hear that in numerology, the year ahead is looking stable and bright. (Finally, some good news!) Numerology is based on the idea that numbers have a spiritual significance. Practitioners believe that learning the symbology of numbers and recognizing patterns can enrich our lives.

Each number, from one to nine, has a spiritual meaning. To apply numerology to a year, you add the digits of a year together until you’re left with a single-digit number. This is known as the Universal Year number — and for 2020, it’s 4 (because 2+0+2+0=4). For comparison, 2019’s Universal Year number was 3 (2+0+1+9=12, then 1+2=3), and 2021's will be 5 (2+0+2+1=5).

Mary Shannon, author of The Witch’s Book of Love, tells Refinery29, “4 Years tend to be relatively stable and have a comfy-cozy homey vibe to them. They are characterized as a time of reflection after the growth that generally occurs with a 3 Year (aka 2019).”

To take advantage of this energy, focus on building both your relationships and your career. “4 Years are a great time to spend connecting with family members and adding to a foundation that already exists in your work life,” Shannon says.

2020 can also be reduced to another significant number. “2020 has an extra dimension to it. Taking out the 0s, this year could be seen as a master number, 22. 22 is the number of the master builder,” Shannon explains. In numerology, there are three "master numbers": 11, 22, and 33. These numbers are particularly highly charged, the numerology resource World Numerology says. 22 is considered the master builder because it "has big ideas, expansive plans, idealism, leadership, and self-confidence."

This number means that it’s a great time to focus on achieving your goals. “Those who find themselves in a spiritual space may relate more to the 22 vibration of 2020 rather than the 4 energy,” Shannon says. “If this is the case, they may find that 2020 is the perfect year to take dreams and manifest them into physical reality.”

For those who practice both astrology and numerology, there's even more significance. 2020 brings us a Saturn-Pluto conjunction in January (meaning that the two planets will be in the same sign, in this case, Capricorn). This conjunction “speaks to an astrological time of tearing down structures,” Shannon says. “This will set the stage for those with a spiritual bent to tap into the 22 master builder energy of 2020 and create structures to replace those that have fallen.” Sounds like good news for your New Year's resolutions!"

Reiki Energy Healing A Night of Q&A with your hosts Patrice Burns & Mary Ellen McMurray

Reiki (ray-kee) is a gentle, yet powerful form of energy medicine and a very effective method of natural healing. As an alternative healing method Reiki energy is often used as a complement to traditional medicine. Reiki can provide relaxation as well as relieve pain, reduce symptoms and accelerate your body's own ability to heal. Reiki also helps in balancing your body energy (chakra system) and aiding in releasing emotional blocks and stress.

The hospitals that apply Reiki are rising and this trend seems unstoppable. A few examples of Canadian hospitals are Mount Sinai's Breast Centre in Toronto, Princess Margaret in Toronto and Ottawa Integrated Cancer Centre. In the past 10 years Reiki use in hospitals has grown worldwide.

Date: Tuesday, January 21st Time: 7:00PM to 9:00PM

Tarot Readings with Guidance from Spirit

I am so excited to bring to Happy Place another amazing bright light Vanessa Giorgio for Tarot readings and guidance through spirit. I had the privilege of Vanessa joining my retreat and sharing her gift of the tarot with the kindred spirits who joined us. This was the best tarot reading I have ever received in all of my years and there have been many. Vanessa connected many dots for me and I can't wait for what will unfold going forward. Not only did Vanessa connect some dots but she gave answers to what was left undone in my most recent 5 years as well as something to look forward to.

Most of Vanessa's experience has been rooted in feeling energy and unknowingly following her intuition. Her gut instinct has guided her through every interaction. She works with her intuition and yours through Tarot and Oracle to create a sacred space for healing and guidance resulting in a more aligned experience.

Vanessa will be sharing a full 1 hour reading, and will be traveling in from downtown Toronto so you will not want to miss this lady!
